character designing

Thanks to Hydro-Quebec for the day off! I got to do a bit of drawing for a story/universe idea that I've had floating around in my head for a while. I intend to flush some of the designs of the world and characters to eventually create in 3D.

Started with some thumbs in marker and brush pen. Then picked out one of the more interesting shapes to sketch out more with marker and pen. Since I plan to take this into zbrush I probably won't need a fully rendered illustration... but if I have time I will probably do it just for fun.

again, a big challenge for me was to stay loose with the thumbs and really flush out as many different ideas, thanks Grant, for keepin me straight ;)

It was a great process to go through and I've posted it so that I won't forget... and its been a while.

a new approach

So... lately, since the stuff I've doing at work is mundane (pushing around vertices and UVs) I've been listening to TED talks again. Most recently, Neil Pasricha's 3 A's talk. It was interesting enough... certainly something I could try for myself but I didn't think of how it could be applied to my personal art... Until, I had the fortune of attending a class by Pascal Campion, just this past friday. Had it not been for the fortunate timing of the two things... I may have never made the connection.

I've always found it difficult to come up with themes or ideas to 'draw on'... at least something persistent and that I found more than just 'interesting' for a short duration. Certainly, the various projects I've had a hand in developing (whilst working in games) did provide a focus for the length of the project. But for my personal stuff - it's been a sea of half thought-out ideas, themes or even styles that I never seem to have the motivation to see through to an end! Talking with G-man at work, I'm always amazed at how he is able to stay attached to his story and make every piece of work that he does relate or work towards is idea for such a long period of time!

Okay thats alot of talk, already... gotta post art in here ;) so here are some quick sketches done during friday's class..

Pascal is an awesome example of the those 3 A's: He's got a great Attitude, he is really Aware (in the artist sense as much as the mental sense)... and he is really Authentic - choosing subjects that her really cares about and really sticking to his priorities, it seems... and DAMN he works pretty fast!

Another thing that he does which is so cool, is that he thinks more about emotion and story, preferring to simplify certain visual elements to allow him to work faster and get to that feeling more immediately. So, looking at my sketches in that light... mine are really lame. I'm not really saying anything about the subjects, about the mood or of how I, myself, felt about that given moment in time.

Now for me, personally, I still need ALOT of practice with basic drawing and getting certain visual elements to translate what I see, literally... and it seems that to get to the next level of transmitting emotion etc... you would need to have mastered all the art basics! Not so, according to Pascal, and a few other artist's out there.

This is a somewhat of relief for me. I don't need to be and will probably never be a master artist. I can take some focus off some rendering or whatever (although - I think I will be always compelled to improve upon those skillz) I have a lot of things around me that I can use as reference, and I can talk more about 'the real me' in my art.

So can I do this? lets see...

paint/sketch of some forest environments. used photos for some texture and shapes that would have been otherwise tedious to render.
dunno why these thumbnails don't link properly but it is there: 1 and 2

chow#249 color pass

quick color pass on this sketch. realizing that this is not a great departure in terms of design. will try to rework this more, time permitting before getting too deep into painting. The facepaint is not reading to well, may also have to redo the whole head.

Always nice to have some downtime at work... was able to get in a bit of drawing. i got inspired by the current 'chow' on

so... here are some thumbs:

and a sketch:

...will do more sketches in ps or will color this one.

Did a bunch of sketches for chow#240 on ... but never got around to finishing them off by deadline. I did try to take a couple of these sketches into photoshop to paint them up... to an astoundingly nauseating degree; In fact, so bad, that it has put me off of digital painting for a while! The sketches were ok... so I might give it a go when I am feeling more inspired.

staying loose

Did a few 'warm up' speed paints (over screen grabs) for some environments that I was about to start, to help me plan out what I was gonna do with the areas. Trying to find some interesting compositions, even though I would eventually have a limited set of assets/shapes to pull from. I'm also trying to emulate some the style of concepts that we have - awe inspiring work...very gestural, moody...yet very accurate with light and well balanced through color and contrast. This be my stab at it:

another zsculpt

Here is a character that I worked on, intermittently, over the last few months. The goal was to get comfortable with polypaint, ztools, materials and bpr in zbrush. This style exploration was done by one of the concept guys at work. It was a really fun style to realize in 3d. This was rendered in 3ds and comp'd in PS.
I didn't get to 'finishing' all the high-res modelling and texturing... only did enough to give a 'sense' of the character. There were definitely a lot of things I learned that should help me out with future pieces.

render test

more polypaint and some bpr rendering, comp'd in PS. I didn't set things up well enough to be able to easily bring all the subtools to 3dsMax for any kind of mi renders.

just checking out some standard 3dsMax materials, ssd in particular. also progressing on the body of this model. eventually gonna have him posed out in a chair...

dropped in on the quebec sketchcrawl for a short while and did a couple scribbles. Looking forward to more sessions... during nicer weather.

...originally just pencil on paper, added faux washes in PS. I would have done it with real watercolor if I had more time, and some paint and a brush and more skillz.

GodFather p.II

So here is a start...
This is, the caricature version of the GodFather that I did before the break. Still some details to do but the basics are there. Also just starting to play with Z mats and renders.
